Girl Be Heard trinidad & Tobago

Birthed in partnership with the U.S. State Department (through the Embassy in Port of Spain) and 2 Cents Movement, Girl Be Heard Trinidad and Tobago empowers teenage girls through theatre-making, spoken word, and song.

After touring eight countries, Girl Be Heard received overwhelming support from partners and community members expressing great interest in providing the same community-based programs we have for young women in and around New York City to those abroad. From October 2016, Girl Be Heard received a grant from the U.S. State Department through the Embassy of Trinidad and Tobago and the Oak Foundation to establish a GBH program outside the United States.

Lead Partner: The 2 Cents Movement

The 2 Cents Movement reaches youth where they are, creating new spaces of contemporary art and discourse that challenge youth to think deeply, speak boldly, care selflessly, and act decisively towards addressing social issues. Girl Be Heard has identified 2 Cents Movement (2CM) to oversee the local chapter. We are working closely with the 2CM leadership team to share best practices and pioneer the first pilot/after-school program in Trinidad and Tobago.

Pioneering a Pilot Program

At the invitation of Trinidadian-based partner Nicole Joseph Chin (of Ms. Brafit) and with strategic guidance from the U.S. Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago, GBH brought Girl Power performances and workshops to schools and community centers in Port of Spain March of 2016. Our young performers had the opportunity to perform for hundreds of school children. We thank Nicole for her vision and passion in making this program possible!

Meet the Girl Be Heard Trinidad and Tobago Team

Girl Be Heard Trinidad and Tobago has a trained team of highly experienced professionals, including six additional Teaching Artists specially trained in our curriculum. A group of 15 girls auditioned and were chosen to be the first cohort to go through GBHTT’s girl empowerment program at Bishop’s Centenary College, which launched on January 6, 2017.
