Dear Friends,

After a historically hot summer, fall is here! The Girl Be Heard team and I hope you have all stayed safe and healthy during this tumultuous time. As vaccination rates increase, we are looking forward to connecting with our community in-person again.

We are excited to announce that we are holding auditions for GBH’s Company Members and Weekend Workshop! GBH's Artistic Company is a theatre performing residency program that gives young women of color and gender-expansive youth the opportunity to receive paid performances throughout their year. Weekend Workshop is a community of emerging artivists from all across the city that explore identity and leadership, power, privilege and oppression, art, and activism. We have workshops in the Bronx, Queens, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. To learn more about these exciting opportunities visit girlbeheard.org/audition.

We deeply appreciate your support as we continue our mission to uplift young leaders and change-makers across the nation.

Catch up on all we have been doing and what’s coming up below! We’ve got several exciting things planned for this fall, so keep your eyes peeled on our social media and be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn if you haven’t already!

Warmly,

Chiwoniso and Team Girl Be Heard

Girl Be Heard participants are shining lights - and we are excited to spotlight a few who are currently enrolled in our programming! Our Teaching Artists share some wonderful reflections below:

Sheridan (Girls Make Movies): Sheridan has a strong background in theater and writing. She has always been involved in school performances and during the seventh grade she joined Girl Be Heard. She received professional theater training from ninth to tenth grade at Stella Adler, and played the role of Helena in their production of A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakepeare. She is currently building her writing skills even further in a program called Girls Write Now. The social issues she is most passionate about are anything related to communities of color, but more specifically issues that affect women of color.

Aniya (Brooklyn Prep): Aniya is a rising senior and an awesome part of Brooklyn Prep’s GBH group this year! She’s a super talented improviser and was always great at imagining characters. Aniya is also an incredible visual artist and we cannot wait to see more of what she makes!

Amplify #GBHNow!

On International Women's Day this year, we launched our latest global advocacy campaign: Girl Be Heard Now. Youth from around the country have been sharing how they use their voices and power to create change in their communities, and how they advocate for gender justice and equality - thus being leaders in their own right. You can sign-on to support the campaign or submit your entry to be highlighted as a leader on our social platforms via the link below.
