Why I'm A Teaching Artist

Dear GBH Family,

Today is our Gala, and as the Lead Teaching Artist at Girl Be Heard, I'm writing to share why I will celebrate tonight. We hope you will celebrate with us virtually by making a donation and following our gala celebration on social media.

I joined Girl Be Heard as a Teaching Artist four years ago because I wanted to create a space that I didn’t have as a young woman growing up in New York City--a space where I could express myself without judgement, talk about issues important to me, and meet like-minded individuals whom I could build lifelong friendships with. That’s the kind of space I provide for my participants.

Through our weekly workshops, participants learn more about themselves and each other through improv, theater games, and deep conversations. They step out of their comfort zones and try new things like performing in front of others for the first time. In the past four years, not only have I witnessed my students grow as artists and activists, but I’ve also had the joy of seeing them build community and grow into the most remarkable human beings. This is #WhyICelebrate.

Tonight we celebrate. If you can't join us in person, please donate to our Gala Campaign to support the powerful work that we do. 100% of the funds raised through the gala will go toward our programs. Many thanks to those who are already coming or have donated to the campaign--thanks for fueling my work!

Warmest,

Ashley Zaragoza,
Girl Be Heard Lead Teaching Artist

P.S. Your support will allow more young people to grow in their creative voices
