Unplugged 2019

Friends,

Welcome to Girl Be Heard’s annual holiday show!

We could not be prouder of the inspiring young artists and activists giving life to our mission to develop, amplify, and celebrate the voices of young women through socially conscious theatre-making. What began as a “girl power” workshop in 2008 has blossomed into a gender inclusive methodology, education curriculum, and year-round program in 11 schools, 2 community centers, and a sister program in Trinidad and Tobago.

Today, you will see our after school and weekend program participants in New York City come together for the first time to “be heard” on a Girl Be Heard stage. All of the theatrical work is written and performed by youth in our programs where they share personal experiences and perspectives, write, laugh, listen, and build a supportive community of artists and activists.

We are deeply indebted to all of the partners and supporters that have helped to make our programs a success. At the very heart of Girl Be Heard are Teaching Artists who amaze us with their artistry, social justice ideals, and fierce commitment to the students they serve, six days a week, via free programs across New York City.

As we head into the new year, Girl Be Heard hopes our performance gives you a renewed spirit of community and commitment to social justice. Thank you for honoring the powerful voices of those we serve by joining us at Unplugged. Happy Holidays from our Girl Be Heard family to yours!
